DEAN MILLS has taught at the University of Mississippi and the University of Illinois. He has worked as director of the Pennsylvania State University’s School of Journalism and as coordinator of graduate study in communications at California State University, Fullerton. He has a bachelor's degree in journalism and Russian from the University of Iowa, a master's in journalism from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. Before entering academia, Mills worked as a reporter at the Mt. Pleasant, IA, News, the Toledo Blade and the Baltimore Evening Sun. He became Moscow Bureau Chief for the Baltimore Sun in 1969. From 1972 to 1975 he was a Sun correspondent in Washington, D.C., where he covered the Supreme Court and the State Department.
