I’m not going to go back to my reporting days, but there are many instances as an editor of where you see the importance of journalism.
Shortly after I came here to The Globe, we launched an investigation of sexual abuse by priests within the Roman Catholic Church. And more importantly than just the fact of sexual abuse was the issue of whether there had been a decades-long cover-up of priests who had engaged in sexual abuse of young children.
And, in fact, we documented that there had been a cover-up. And it had lasted 40 years or more and that piece of journalism has had an immediate impact. It’s had an enduring impact – not just on this community, but on the entire country – particularly the practices of Roman Catholic Church – the entire country, and now, throughout the world.
And I think it was a tremendously important piece of journalism, and its effects are going to be feel felt for many decades to come.
